[For Dandy it's been months since Maya could swim with him, and although it hasn't been quite so long for Maya, the 'sleep' has made it feel like it's been a while. Once they've both gotten caught up swimming it feels like they won't leave for days, but not even Maya and Dandy can neglect all the activity going on around them. Still, even after socialising the water of the lake is lifebringing, and so is the chance to spend a little time alone doing what's clearly the best action of all, swimming.

This also means there's plenty of time to talk, something Maya has taken advantage of. There's still more she needs to know about while she was gone, okay!]

Daaaandy~

[She calls, bumping noses with his when she approaches him.]

Hey~

[Before Dandy met Rosch, swimming almost became unenjoyable for him, which should be a crime in itself. Granted, he was a mer long before Maya was, so swimming by himself was nothing new, but having a buddy just made him feel more like a...person? There wasn't that weird seclusion he felt where he had to part from the few friends he did have back then. That weird feeling that grew in his stomach when he realized his aquatic nature meant he had to distance himself because not everyone wanted to go swimming for...some reason.

Going back to that was unbearable, he was a dolphin without a pod.

So now that he not only has a mer friend, but his mer girl, Dandy is once again living it up on both land and sea. Or...lake. And what better way to live it up than to take a well deserved nap. Dandy is more than likely half awake when Maya bumps her nose into him, but that is probably the only sure fire way to get him up without any of the attitude. He lights up at the playful gesture, spinning in place so he's right-side up, a stupid smile already on his face.

They're together, in their element, nothing can bring him down.]

Y'know, you keep this up, and I'll start to think you might like me~

Mmm, it'll have taken you long enough.

[Snorts Maya, blissfully unaware that it is she who is always oblivious, not Dandy. It doesn't matter, here, when she's playing with him. She reaches out to hold onto his arm despite being able to stay in place, and keeps grinning.]

You really are different lately, huh?

[Happier, it seems. Not that he wasn't happy the last time she was... aware, but... it's something more, this time. Happier, making friends, going weak early for idols... a whole new Dandy. Sorta.]

[Okay, maybe some things can still bring him down. The fins near Dandy's ears twitch a little as he pauses for just the briefest moment, unsure how to take that. He's certain that Maya doesn't mean anything by it, but at the same time...

...Well, sometimes people just want the same Dandy.

Has he really been that different? He knows his hair took a huge leap, but she said she liked that... Maybe she's seeing things he's not...]

I mean...if I'm doin' something you aren't into, I can always dial it back...

Huh?

[Maya is... taken completely by surprise by this particular reaction. Not many things get to Dandy-- especially not out of her mouth. She raises a brow and tilts her head after a moment of wide-eyed blinking, giving him a crooked smile. Maybe he's... playing with her?]

What do you mean? I like it. I woke up and you're like, everywhere..

[Which explains nothing, even as she manages a laugh underwater, almost overwhelmed with the thought. If he wasn't so crazy about her, she might even be worried he'd leave her behind.]

[Oh.

Right.

Of course.

Of course she totally likes it, who wouldn't?! Dandy laughs a bit harder than he probably means to, but he gives Maya a quick poke on her nose as he does so.]

HA, you should see the look on your face!! I totally got you!!

[Who are you fooling, space boy?]

[Maya scrunches up her nose when it's poked, pouting. Dandy is so bad at this kind of lie-- if she wasn't suspicious before, she is now.]

Come on! What kind of joke was that?

[Pushing forward a little she gets right up in his face, trying to get eye contact as though the truth is written on his irises.]

[You know, it's times like these where Dandy remembers she worked with a lawyer. If he could sweat underwater, he definitely would be by now, so instead all he can do is raise his eyebrows and make himself look even guiltier.]

A really...bad one... apparently...

[Well, at least that wasn't a lie.]

[With something like this, Maya would love to have some evidence on her side. It's totally easier to get information out of the people you care about when you treat it like an investigation! But all Maya really has for now is a hunch, and.. well, the fact Dandy's an open book.]

Dandy. You're not telling me something.

[The truth, laid out, and then--]

...Seriously, are you actually that worried about something like that?

[She swaps her look of frustration for one of concern, putting her hand to her mouth as she's wont to do.]

C'mon, you know me, I don't sweat the small stuff.

[Dandy leans back despite floating, hands soon resting behind his head. He shuts his eyes from the world, as if not being able to see will somehow shield him from anymore accusations.

...And yet, at the same time, one of his eyes peeks open and he catches a glimpse of Maya placing her hand over her mouth. It's little things like these that make him curse under his breath, how is he supposed to ignore something so pure?]

I mean...you came out here to have a good time, I don't wanna turn into a giant downer on you just like that...

[Maya frowns again. He... really doesn't want to tell her anything that might be upsetting, does he? She's never put much attention to it before, but... has he always been holding back?]

I'm always having a good time out here, come on. I can listen for a while!

[She swims after him, floating closer to follow sort of above him and guide herself with her palm on his stomach. He's not getting away so casually!!]

Come on, you don't tell me anything!

[She's nothing if not deliberate.]

Hm.

[She's not wrong, he doesn't tell her much. Usually it's just because he doesn't like dumping his issues on people when it doesn't involve them, but...he supposes in a relationship...things become a little more...involved. Huh, maybe it's just a trait that carried over from years of being like that.

Well, she said she liked his changes...what's the harm in another one?]

I mean it, it'd be a total mood changer. Last chance, we can always just forget it and go back to playing.

[He just...wants to make sure. In fact, he doesn't seem to be hiding much at all anymore, Dandy looks directly at Maya as he drifts right under her, not trying to be sneaky or anything. He just also doesn't want to be a huge buzzkill, awaiting the okay.]

Yeah, well. We don't always have to play.

[Maya tells him, retuning that look of his with a soft one of her own.]

Mood, changed. And I promise you won't bring me down.

[Oh boy... Dandy can't stop himself from giving a small, if not defeated, chuckle. "You did this to yourself, Dandy" he tells himself as he shakes his head. At least Maya has a way of relaxing him, the way she reassures him is gentle enough to ease him into the idea of spilling his inner most thoughts.

...And, well, they're underwater. It's not like anyone can listen in, either.]

Well alright then.

[Where to even begin with this? Despite everything, Dandy does his best to remain as chill as possible. He doesn't want to make this a show or anything, just something he needs to get over with already.]

So, uh... [He shrugs his shoulders in a sort of "you know" sort of way. Not that she actually knows. If she did, none of this would be happening.] ...I mean.. Geez...

[This is a lot harder than he thought it would be. No wonder no one wants to hear about their partner's ex, everything about this feels awkward.

And then Dandy remembers he really doesn't care about awkward and pushes on.]

I guess it's really no surprise, but you aren't my first girlfriend. The breakup was...uh, a bit rough for me.

[Maya listens, attentive and alert, without goading him too much. Whatever's bothering him is enough to sober the situation-- ah. A girlfriend. That's not entirely surprising in itself, but--]

Well, yeah, I figured you had lots of girlfriends.

[Like Larry, or something. Some guys just date around, and Dandy's always seemed to be that type.

Then again, it's not like he'd run to someone else when she'd disappeared. And that in itself was weird, too, wasn't it?]

Aha...

[Well, it's not like he didn't want people thinking that. Dandy never expected his playboy lifestyle to bite him in the ass in such a weird way, but here he is. This is simply an awkwardness he can't get over.]

Correction, I had one girlfriend. A little over ten years ago.

[He just...wants her to know there's been...a gap. As if to reassure her they aren't getting back together anytime soon.]

She, uh...left me. For some other dude we knew.

[Dandy's hand makes its way to his neck as he begins to rub up and down nervously, is he seriously going to let this get to him? Now? He's long since been over this, but for some reason thinking about Paul still pisses him off.]

[Maya's... not really sure if she should feel conflicted or not, or... even surprised. One girlfriend, ten years ago? The 'one girlfriend' thing is a little more confusing than the ten years ago part, but maybe it all makes sense, too. Maybe that's the entire reason why.]

Wow, you're as big a sap as Nick.

[Gross.

...But Maya doesn't express that too much beyond a teasing smile, shoving her knuckles against his chest.]

What happened? Why would she do that?

[What's up with love, man, sounds complicated]

[It's very easy to tell how much he appreciates that by the way his eyebrow twitches. Thanks, babe. This is a sensitive subject for him.]

Look, it's kinda long and complicated, and I'm not even sure if you'd get it. ...But long story short, I changed in a way I couldn't pick up on, so I wasn't the same dude she fell for, okay?

[His tone is rather rough, he even sounds angry, and Dandy himself picks up on it. So he sighs, that's definitely not how he wanted to come across, he isn't angry. Not anymore, anyway.]

...I mean, it's not her fault. Sometimes people just don't work out for reasons you can't help.

[Maya pulls back-- not so much alarmed, or not as much as she would have been. She's much less easily startled than before, finally being strong, and she doesn't have much to be afraid of when it comes to Dandy. Maya's brow spots knit in confusion, and she covers her mouth with her hand again.]

But-- everyone changes.

[Not just in Monsterland. Nick changed, Mia changed, even Maya changed-- and she always hoped for the better! But... what would it be like if Nick just stopped wanting to see her because she'd grown up? Or what about Mia?

Was it the same kind of hurt between her mother and aunt when they were young? Could changing really make someone stop loving you?]

That doesn't make any sense...

[Even though he said he was going to be a downer, Dandy's still surprised by just how down Maya appears. Maybe it's just his nature, but he's quick to try and lighten things up.]

Like I said, no big deal.

[He never said that, but he likes to think it was implied. Somehow.]

...well, guess it was a big deal to me back then.

[And for the next TEN YEARS.]

But you gotta remember, not all races see everything the same way a human does, baby. What makes zero sense to us could make complete sense to someone else, right?

[Also he was dating an alien, that was probably important.]

Hmm... I guess you're right.

[An alien, that makes sense. Of course! He's a cool space-man.]

Maybe there are aliens out there that don't change... but people are supposed to!

[Nothing stays the same, especially not people. Maya may have skipped on a few training sessions as a kid, but she knows that much-- people change, and people die, and that's life.]

If you just stayed the same person forever, that'd be boring.

[That's a really good point, and Dandy can't think of anything to say at first. People ARE supposed to change, that's just life and science and junk. It's like Maya just opened his eyes to something that seemed so obvious now that she's said it out loud.

She did it, she cracked the code.]

[So he laughs. Just like that. It's a rare, genuine laugh coated with a sense of relief that goes on longer than it probably should.

But he can't help it! He's happy! What she said is something he's always wanted to hear, he just never knew it. Oh, if only he could go on like this forever...]

[...but he can't, so he eventually stops, that smile never leaving his face. Maya Fey, what did he do to deserve you.]

Why the hell was I even worried...

[It's not like Maya could even pick up on those kinds of things, he's pretty sure she can't, anyway. Maybe mediums can pick up on dimensional planes and their differences, but something tells him they can't, that it's not important if they could. It's not like he's warping anytime soon.

But wow. People are SUPPOSED to change, even just repeating it in his head feels good. A pretty big weight was lifted from his shoulders just then, a weight he probably could've lost sooner if he would just OPEN UP MORE.]
