[Maya's eyes are wide with alarm at another unexpected reaction at first, but something about the way he laughs tells her not to worry. She isn't sure she understands what's happening, but the sound he's making here under the water is too lovely to her ears-- and to her heart-- to interrupt. When he finally calms down and speaks, Maya softens up her gaze and she reaches out to cup his cheek in her hand and in doing so keeps some of his hair out of the way of his face, too.]

Just cos your hair gets longer or you make a few friends... I'm pretty sure even then, you're still the same old Dandy deep down.

Yeah...

[Who even is the same old Dandy anymore? He certainly wanted it to be the cool loner asshole he always likes to present himself as, but at his core, he knows that isn't true. That's how he got here, anyway, he doubts Maya would be floating above him right now if he was still making fun of her titties or viciously calling her names. At the same time, he knows damn well he still likes to go around pushing buttons and provoking stupid arguments with people, and he wouldn't hesitate to dropkick a dude if he's really pissed off. Hell, he's still pumped up over biting some guy's head off, and he has no plans of ever changing that. No, the 'deep down' Dandy hasn't truly taken over yet, but he finds himself at a weird but comfortable middle ground.

Would anyone even recognize him when he finally gets out of here? It's strange how much he can't seem to care anymore, not after hearing Maya spell it out for him. Fuck them, he's allowed to change.

Carefully now, he starts to pull Maya closer to him, so she's resting on his chest and they can just float around together. One arm hangs lazily over her waist in a sort of hug while his other hand buries itself behind her head in a mass of hair. He watches idly as whatever manages to escape his grasp--namely, most of it--drifts above him in a beautiful, relaxing display of pure mermaid perfection. God, he missed this so much, a part of him wonders if it's all still part of the longest dream he's ever had, fully expecting to wake up to an empty bed again.]

Well...I'm pretty sure you didn't come out here just to watch me mope around. What'd you really wanna do~?

[Relaxing into this new position, Maya drums her fingers agains Dandy's collarbone. She's real as real can be, and for all she hasn't mentioned anything, his demeanor is comforting to her as well. He always takes what she says so seriously.]

I'm here to swim with you, Captain, unless you plan on moping forever.

It feels like it's been a long time since we talked.

[it's a weird sensation for her to have missed to much, really, but still.

And that's part of it, too-- trying to figure out just how much she's missed.]

Mm...

[It delights him to no end whenever she calls him Captain, and his appreciation shows in the way he begins to scratch her head lightly instead of simply holding onto it. He kinda feels like a captain right now. Being submerged and just floating around always felt like the closest he'd ever get to being in space again. You know, if fish were stars and gills were a helmet.

It's really too bad he can't stay under there forever, it's definitely what his fish brain tells him is more preferable. Dandy would be lying if he said he didn't like the look of his tail more than his legs, the giant fluke feeling more natural even if he wasn't born with it. The same applied to Maya, just seeing her tail rest on top of his is way hotter for reasons he can't really explain. It makes her look so soft, so much more hydrodynamic, shit he normally wouldn't care about. The tiny voice inside his head can recognize that as the Fog God's tempering, but the rest of him doesn't like to think about it because he knows it'll only make him mad.]

Way too long. [Although he's surprised it feels that way to her, he just assumed her absence felt like...waking up from a really long nap. What did they do to her...] Whaddya wanna talk about?

[He's game for anything after dumping his soul like that. Now that he's defeated that hurdle, anything else feels like a good time.]

Hmm... Well, it seems like you were actually pretty busy while I was gone.

[As much as mermaid brain might want her to focus on other things, she's still an attorney's assistant (and Herself) at heart, and wants to have a good approximation of the situation. If she were a little more self-concerned she might vocalise or even realise that the influence of the Fog on either of them worries her, but that's not nearly as important as the power the fog god has against the rest of everyone.

...Speaking of.]

You know. Like becoming the fog slayer?

[Hey what the fuck danders]

[Oh. He was kinda hoping for, like, samurais or something, but...

...No, you know what, he's still way too happy to let that get him down. It's not like she's wrong to ask, Dandy didn't realize his sudden new opinion on the fog god happened entirely during her absence. He supposes that might seem a little...strange.]

Check it.

I'm gonna kill the fog god.

...huh?

[Maya stares, mouth agape, unmoving apart from the gentle flow of water around her. The movement of her hair almost even emphasizes how still her expression is.]

[Geez, don't look at him like that... It almost makes him second-guess himself...

Almost.

Instead, Dandy just doubles down on his stance and finds himself getting riled up. Not that his sudden bout of anger is directed towards her or anything, but it's clear he feels very strongly about this particular title.]

You heard me! I'm finally puttin' my foot down. ...Fluke. Whatever!

Look, I know it's lame, but I can't keep pretending everything's okay while people keep dying. She made it pretty damn clear that's the kinda crap she's into while you were out, and I say it's about time she had a taste of her own medicine.

[Come along with Maya on a face journey as her brows wave from surprised to concerned to confused. Her mouth drops open a little, and after processing what he's said, Maya replies--]

What... What did she do?

Are you serious?

[This is big talk! This isn't fun and games anymore!]

Long story short? I died.

[And he cannot express enough how that is the short version of it.]

So yeah, I guess you could say I'm....................................dead serious.

I--

Oh, man! That was a really good one, dangit!

[yes she's complimenting his shitty morbid pun as if she's jealous.]

You can't just... die and come back.

[See, that is exactly why he loves her. Her compliment makes it really difficult to stay so serious.]

Monsters...kinda do? Not even kinda, they totally do... Just another way the fog god loooooves to screw with us, 'cuz now I gotta remember THAT for the rest of my life.

[It wasn't. Fun.]

Oh...

[It doesn't really make any sense, but if the Fog God really is that powerful... well, that's that, isn't it? There's no sensible explanation for it, it just is.]

I'm sorry you had to go through that.

[However it happened, it doesn't sound like it was great. but--]

I'm glad you're okay now. You are, right?

Eh, as far as dying goes, I'd say I came out pretty okay. No scars or anything, I dunno what I'd do if my face got jacked up.

[There would've probably been a lot more anger, for starters.]

Speaking of, that's another reason why I need to get my ass into gear. I'm sick of the whale crap.

Aw, but being a giant monster's the coolest part...

[Mumbles Maya in a voice that almost sounds envious.]

But-- like, what do you mean, you're gonna... Do you know how to stop her?

[The coolest part of what is all Dandy can think about for a good second.]

I can't begin to tell you how much it's not.

[Like...it really worries him how jealous she almost sounded right there... Maya, why would you...]

A giant monster can't, oh I dunno, hold you like this. Or get a chance to touch your hair... Kissin's out of the question if there's no lips. Can't snuggle up in bed, or on the couch, or in the van. Nothing's ever in my size, I could really go on all day.

[Why anyone would want that is beyond him. Don't go doing anything crazy, Maya...]

And if you're asking if I got a plan, then I can proudly tell you that..... no, I do not. You know me, baby, I'm not really the thinking guy.

...But I guess I could...start by tracking down whoever poked her hard enough first...

Oh.. I didn't think about all that...

[Dandy isn't the only one who doesn't always think. She hasn't even thought yet about what it would be like if suddenly Dandy weren't there, and she couldn't have this level of affection with someone anymore. After being so sated Maya's nearly forgotten how it felt to be so touch starved. Nearly. If Dandy likes all this even so much more, then fog nights must be the loneliest-- especially when each monster's fog form is so isolatingly unique.

But Dandy's lack of a plan is way easier to focus on. Maya snorts a little, water bubbling up from her mouth as she rolls her eyes.]

Yeah, that sounds like a great place to start! They probably know the most about her if they could really do something...

[It was a rough time for sure, at least until Rosch started babysitting him around the end of what he now calls the great Maya drought. But before then it was just him and his stupid giant self, moping at the bottom of the lake, just waiting for the fog to move on out already. That sure isn't the Dandy way to live, that's just...boring.

And lonely.

And he'd really like to stop thinking about it now.]

I thiiink I got a good idea where to start lookin', too. If you, uh... [Dandy removes his hand from the back of Maya's head so he can scratch at his cheek.] ...want in on this... I mean, I don't really know how you feel about it...

...but if you could do me a favor and maybe...y'know, just at least stop tellin' people to go hit it up with the priests, 'cuz every one I've seen has been completely batshit...

But they're the only ones who even know anything about her!

[Maya protests, not having considered that maybe, just maybe, the Fog God tells lies.

...But she hasn't protested helping him, yet.]

I know, I know, I know, I know, it makes a ton of sense if this was some cool kinda murder mystery.

But it's not, it's just a crazy ass cult. Aaaaaand if you keep throwing newbies at 'em, they can get new members and send more people after my ass. You can see how I might not want that, yeah?
