[Honestly Dandy really should get in the habit of waking up early, at least when he KNOWS fog changes are approaching. But he's lazy, and he wants to enjoy his bed as much as he can before he's inevitably stuck sleeping outside for a few days. He can't even have the fun of saying he's sleeping under the stars, his favorite, the fog shields them from view when his hair isn't already doing it for him...

The lake's not a short walk from Bavan, so Dandy's transformation is already done by time he paws up to the shore. It would've been another easy flop into the water, followed by his usual moping at the bottom of the lake, if it weren't for some obnoxious stomping. There aren't a lot of fog forms as huge as he is that hang around here these days, so of course he has to check it out to make sure whoever it is isn't someone who'd ruin his mope time.

He definitely wasn't expecting to see something so similar to himself.]

What the hell?!

[He'd question if this was some kinda trick, it's not like duplicates aren't a problem around here, but this one is a lot...rounder. Softer looking. Not nearly as menacing.

...and of course she has a very familiar scent.]

Dude, Maya, what happened now?!

[He rushes over, making his own stomping sounds in the process, mouth hung agape in disbelief. Oh god, please don't let this be his fault somehow.]

[Maya rolls over and back onto her feet, a... really easy maneuver now that she's some kind of bearotterwhale.]

I dunno!!

[She replies, squeaking a little as she does, hair baubles still swinging in her hair. She almost looks like some kind of ice spirit from a children's Secular Winter Holiday Special.]

This isn't what I looked like last time! Look!

[Maya rears back onto her back legs to hold up her paws to show Dandy-- and almost loses her balance again. Thank goodness for that big ol' dolphin tail.]

[Shit.

That's really fucking cute.]

...Uh, yeah, I noticed.

[LOOK AT HER, LOOK AT THOSE PAWS. She's like some kind of giant whale teddy bear, he just wants to cuddle her, it's all too much. He's sure she'd be much scarier if he wasn't so huge, but from where he's standing she's precious.

This isn't fair.]

You...you doin' alright? You don't sound as pissed as last time...

[How dare she. She probably is terrifying, especially if you're a human and being chased, but comparatively she really is like a teddy. Sometimes cute is also terrifying.

It'd maybe help if she wasn't disoriented by it and acting like an idiot over it, but it's all so new and she can move and she can move in and out of water and she could go-- anywhere, if she really wanted to, now that she's not limited to a tail. And also there's no half-sentient tongue moving itself around just under her chest. That part is nice too.]

Oh, what? This time it's way less freaky, don't you think?

[Maya asks, squeezing her middle a little when she crosses a paw over it, not thinking too much about it. She lowers herself back down to all fours, looking herself over.]

It could probably be worse.

[In this hell it can always be worse]

[That's a great point, Dandy's always been thankful he's never gotten extra mouths or eyes or limbs like a lot of people seem to get. He looks like any regular aquatic alien he'd see anywhere else. Hell, if he could GET OFF THIS PLANET, he's certain he could register himself for a good amount of woolongs.

But he also knows the downfalls of having a form like this.]

Give it time, trust me.

[Still, he can't stop himself from almost circling her, looking over her changes like he can't believe what he's seeing. She really does just look like a cuter version of himself, with no horrible tongue to slobber all over him this time. Definitely a glow up, but he knows damn well the excitement can only last so long.]

Nuh-uh! I'm not letting the fog get me down now that I have legs!

[Maya's determined, throwing her head up in a bit of a huff for just a moment. She does feel stronger, like she could run for hours! And eat a lot of people!!!

...Which she isn't going to do! But maybe she could do the running for hours bit.]

I mean, the biggest bummer last time was being stuck in the lake. Now I can go pretty much anywhere.

[And what more does anyone need??]

I mean, at least until you wanna head inside. You ain't gettin' through any door with that dolphin booty.

[Still not about to call themselves whales, nobody needs that reminder, not at a time like this.]

[No one say the whale-word. They're dolphins. Which is also true but they're stupid.]

Well, yeah, but I couldn't do that the way I looked before, either!

[Maya points out.]

There's other things to do! It can be like, a camping trip! Oh, except I'm like, my own tent and everything!

[HOW DOES THAT MAKE SENSE]

[Yeah, seriously?]

You're gonna...sleep inside yourself?

[Wait, no, is that too close to the whale shit? Maybe he's being too much of a buzzkill... She was pretty much trapped in the lake last time...]

I guess it would look like more freedom compared to ol' chestmouth, huh?

No, but the rain will roll right off me and I won't get cold!

[So that's what she meant.]

That was so weird...

[She pats her chest with her paws again, and then-- sort of.... grins? She's baring her dumb orca teeth anyway.]

I guess you could say this one's a bit more... bearable.

[don't mind her just holding up a paw like huh? huh???? looks bear-like huh????]

[One difference between their forms is that Dandy's front paws still work as perfectly capable hands. He clearly demonstrates this when he suddenly places them on Maya's shoulders...or the closest to her shoulders as he can get, after she delivers her truly terrible pun.

Even with his eyes covered in hair, his look is intense.]

I love you so fucking much.

[Maya's left blinking in surprise for a few moments (not that.... it's super visible, what with her eyespots being what they are) as she takes that in-- and then she's a bundle of laughs and squeaks, pushing her dolphin nose forward to nuzzle Dandy's.]

What can I say? I've got the best jokes.

[Even as a giant monster. Which really, again! Still isn't the worst!]

[That muzzle very rarely smiles, and yet just like that, there he is beaming like an idiot. He's never felt anything so tender against that monster snoot, a weaker man would've died by now.]

Heh... No kiddin'.

[But back to business. He can't deny he heard her fall over earlier, it's what brought him over in the first place. If she's gonna act fine, he might as well make sure she stays fine.]

So, how about it? Need a hand getting used to walkin' on yours?

Bold of you to assume I'm not already an expert!

[she's not.]

But I guess I could use a few pointers. I haven't even tried swimming yet..

[Looks like Dandy's gotta teach her how to be a monster.... again.]

Don't kid yourself, I already heard you fallin' on your ass a mile away.

[Or like really nearby, who's counting?]

But seeing as we're celebrating your new legs, I'll let you choose. Walkin' or swimmin'?

[Maya rocks side to side, only slightly sheepish. It's fine!! she was just surprised!]

Personally? I'm sick and tired of being stuck in the lake.

Alright, lesson one: Try to keep up~

[And with that he bounds off, like an excitable giant dog, running away from the lake. Just anywhere but there, to show off her newish freedom. He wants to see what this expert is capable of, and then he'll take it from there.

Or just keep running, who knows. He almost looks like he's having fun with this, but that can't be possible, he hates the fog.]

[As far as Maya knows he sure does hate the fog! Which is why she's a little surprised when he takes off.]

Hey! No fair!

[She protests despite knowing how useless it is. She runs after him, stumbling to start but hitting her stride quick. She's determined not to lose, after all, if he's going to be a cheater!]

It's sink or swim, baby!! [Or...sink and run?? Fall and run?? Whatever.] No time for being fair!!

[Thankfully Dandy's body is large and clunky, so catching up to him isn't that hard. He may not even notice she's getting closer, much too focused on his run. His hair manages to stay out of his eyes for once, if only because of the wind, and his tongue lolls out, again, much like a dog.

This is not the face of a man who gets angry so often.]

[Running and leaping is all a little easier to coordinate and learn-- probably because it doesn't suddenly involve having a tail instead of legs-- and it's not long before Maya's at least gaining on him. When she's close enough, she tries to leap forward to swat at his tail.]

See! I'm gonna catch up to you!

[She's laughing along, too. Dandy actually seems to be in a good mood! Who knew this would lift his spirits.]

[If Dandy were a smarter man, this might all concern him. He could probably figure out this is all just the more animalistic part of his dumb monster brain rejoicing that there is Another™. His pod feels more complete, he isn't a lone wolfdolphin anymore!!

Instead he just focuses on playing like an idiot.]

Hey, check you out! You catch on quick!!

[There's so much PRIDE in his voice, like he's genuinely happy for her. He doesn't even yelp when she smacks his tail.]

But I'm still better~

[Being smarter about it doesn't help them any, though. Like it or hate it, they're stuck here- so... better off liking it, right? At least that's what Maya's content to keep in the back of her mind as she plays through the horror just like Dandy.

Why mope around if she can turn it into something better?

She's pretty happy to hear that pride, too. It might be about something... really unusual, but it's pride all the same.]

Just you wait!

[She'll catch up, or she'll at least try! It's harder to match his stride, but she's slightly more streamlined. It's enough that she can leap forward to hold on to his tail in attempts to bring him down like a little goblin, though.]

[Maybe he should have seen it coming with how she was able to reach his tail in the first place, but Dandy finds himself caught off guard and pulled down along said tail. His feet stumble and he trips over every one of his limbs, causing him to flop into an embarrassing roll as he tumbles to a stop.

Majestic creature he is not.]

Alright... I say you pass...

[Ow.]

[Maya's not free from the majesty, though; Dandy's tumble causes her to flip and roll too, landing Maya a bit sideways on her back, a little ways past Dandy's shoulder.]

See? Doubting me gets you nowhere.

[She can't keep up the smugness for long, though, bubbling into laughs and squeaks whistles again. She isn't hurt, and she feels so strong and she's having fun and the fog is definitely, definitely not getting to her head at all.

It's just nice not to hate being here every once in a while.]

[Dandy simply lies there in his defeat, smiling to himself as Maya squeaks and giggles. The sounds cause the fins on his head to twitch in unison, it's an incredibly soothing sound. Soothing enough to make him forget any bumps or bruises he may have required, anyway.

It's funny... Besides her hair, Maya looks absolutely nothing like how she used to, but none of that seems to matter. There's a big whistling whale-bear right there, but all he can see is.....Maya.

It's...reassuring in a way? He always worried the fog made him too different, ugly, animal-like. Maybe all this time she just saw...Dandy, too.]

You can say that again, I think I'm good right here.

[He ain't going anywhere after that stunt. At least...for now.]
